Abstract
According to moral error theorist Richard Joyce, moral obligations are believed to have inescapable authority, and this belief can serve as a criterion for an adequate moral theory. While moral realism must accommodate both features of inescapability and authority in terms of its favorite moral facts or properties, naturalistic moral realism fails to sufficiently accommodate moral authority. Thus, naturalistic moral realism, or simply moral naturalism, is inadequate as a moral theory. In this paper, I argue that moral naturalists can refuse Joyce’s demand since his two arguments supporting it fail. Against the first argument that moral realism without inescapable authority addresses something other than morality because inescapable authority is the essential part of the concept of moral obligation, I show that moral realists can make sure that they are dealing with the same thing by referring, as opposed to denoting. Regarding the second argument that moral realism without authority cannot have grounds for blaming a moral wrongdoer, I argue the following three points: Joyce’s moral authority is best conceptualized as a higher-order inescapable obligation to comply with specific moral obligations; invoking the higher-order obligation is not necessary for moral blame; legitimizing blame for disobedience would not serve as a criterion for an adequate moral theory without further discussion. If I am correct, Joyce’s criticism of moral naturalism, which presupposes the demand, has no force.
