역사적으로 일본제국주의는 제1차 세계대전 이후 변화된 국내·외 질서에 대응하기 위해 군국주의로 나아갔으며, 아시아·태평양전쟁을 일으켜 전범국가(戰犯國家)가 되었다. 전시 일본이 패배하게 된 핵심적인 요인은 전쟁지속능력의 한계였으며, 이는 전시경제 체제하에서 일본제국주의가 첨단 무기체계 연구개발과 전시생산체제를 효과적으로 가동하지 못했다는 점을 반영하고 있다. 최근 미·중 전략경쟁이 심화하는 가운데 일본은 가치와 진영을 중심으로 한 신냉전의 국제질서에 편승하여 전범국가의 굴레인 평화헌법 체제를 허물고 군사 재무장을 서두르고 있다. 이러한 전환기적 안보상황 속에서 아시아·태평양전쟁기 일본의 패전요인을 무기체계 연구개발과 전시생산체제를 중심으로 고찰하는 것은 추체험(追體驗)의 관점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다고 판단된다. 따라서 본 연구는 최근 미·일동맹을 강화한 이후 방위산업 대국을 지향하며 군사 재무장을 추진하고 있는 일본의 전략적 행보를 분석하고 대응방향을 모색하는 과정에서 중요한 역사적 함의를 갖는다고 판단된다.
Abstract
Historically, Japanese imperialism advanced toward militarism in response to the changing domestic and international order after World War I, and became a war criminal state by starting the Asia-Pacific War. The key factor in Japan’s defeat during the war was the limitation of its wartime sustainability, which reflects the fact that under the wartime economic system, Japanese imperialism was unable to effectively operate its advanced weapon systems research and development and wartime production system. Recently, amid the intensifying strategic competition between the U.S. and China, Japan is taking advantage of the new Cold War international order centered on values and factions, and is rushing to rearm its military by breaking down the peace constitutional system, which can be said to be the shackles of a war criminal state. In this transitional security situation, it is judged that examining the factors of Japan's defeat in the Asia-Pacific War, focusing on the weapon systems research and development and wartime production system, is significant from the perspective of re-enactment. Therefore, this study is judged to have important historical implications in the process of analyzing Japan's strategic moves, which have been pursuing military rearmament and aiming to become a defense industry power since the recent strengthening of the US-Japan alliance, and seeking a response direction.
