Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Recently, the urban environment has changed rapidly, and the number of idle spaces is increasing accordingly. Unused space that remains aimless can cause urban decline, but if it is effectively regenerated, it can be a new resource to promote the recovery of local communities. Although the existing idle space regeneration has shown a limitation of not being sufficiently effective in terms of recovery of local communities, AI generated is drawing attention as an alternative to overcome these limitations. Through this, idle space regeneration that reflects the needs of local communities is possible, and the limitations of the existing approach method can be supplemented. Therefore, this study aims to study the design process using generated AI to derive idle space regeneration design based on local community recovery as a follow-up study on the "Research on the Effect of Unused Space Regeneration on Local Community Restoration" (Moon & Lee.2025). (Method) This study aims to study the idle space regeneration design process based on regional community recovery using generated AI, and theoretical consideration is conducted based on previous studies, and relationships are established by deriving the characteristics of idle space regeneration and community recovery. Also, a prototype for design visualization is constituted, and a design element and a space element are derived based on the derived characteristics to design a design prompt. After that, the generated visual image is analyzed and the prompt is optimized to derive more sophisticated design visualization, and finally, an idle space reproduction design process using the generated AI is proposed. (Results) The image generated by analyzing the generated image based on the initial prompt and deriving the final prompt through prompt engineering includes an open and flexible space, a design reflecting regional identity, and elements that induce natural interaction, which confirmed that design visualization using generated AI is an effective approach to idle space regeneration based on community recovery. (Conclusions) This study studied the generation AI-based design process to derive idle space regeneration designs for the recovery of local communities. Using generative AI and prompt engineering, we strengthened the intuition and systematic nature of space planning and proceeded with the process of visual embodiment through Mid Journey. Through this, it was confirmed that the design method that combines data-based simulation and visual representation is effective. However, there is a limitation that failed to examine the linkage between AI-based design and actual spatial implementation. In the future, empirical research based on user participation is needed, and it is expected that this study will be used as a basic data for creative use of generated AI in various fields such as urban space planning, public design, and smart city planning.
