Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Technological advancements in the 4th industrial revolution era (4IR) are presenting new challenges and opportunities across education and industry. Generative AI (GenAI) is attracting attention as an innovative tool that enhances creative design capabilities and improves learning efficiency, and its potential applications in spatial design are also increasing. In light of the potential of GenAI, this study aimed to develop and systematically organize an educational process model for learner-centered spatial design. (Method) This study was conducted as a staged research to analyze the educational utilization of Text-based GenAI and Image-based GenAI to reflect it in the educational process for spatial design. First, it analyzed previous studies on the technical characteristics and educational applicability of GenAI to establish a theoretical foundation and derived the limits of existing spatial design education. On that basis, it structured a new educational process based on GenAI for spatial design by applying the Double Diamond Model as an educational framework. Afterwards, it derived the limits of existing spatial design education, based on which it reconstructed the GenAI-based educational process by using the double diamond model. Lastly, it designed a new educational model by systematically distinguishing the contribution of AI and the role of learners at each stage. (Results) The proposed model consisted of four stages: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver, and in each stage, GenAI effectively supported the learners' design process and creative expression. Text-based GenAI assisted the learners' strategic judgment by focusing on data analysis and design logic enhancement, and Image-based GenAI contributed to improving the completeness of design visualization through visual data generation and simulation. This created an environment where learners can focus on creative design activities rather than repetitive and complex tasks. (Conclusions) This study presented the possibility of a GenAI-based educational process model for spatial design as it can complement the limits of existing educational methods and develop learners' design experiences more creatively and efficiently. As a result of the study, it confirmed the possibility of Text-based GenAI and Image-based GenAI as the former can support data-based analysis and strategic direction settings, and the latter can help learners to compare and review various design alternatives and develop them through visual materials and simulations. In addition, it was confirmed that the collaborative structure between GenAI and learners reduces the complexity of the design process, and allows learners to actively participate and apply creative thinking and logical approaches. The research findings showed the possibility of GenAI in spatial design education as a new paradigm. Therefore, it is expected that this study will provide insights into providing a basic foundation for nurturing talents with creative thinking and digital technology utilization skills.
