Abstract

This study focuses on ‘Pachinko’ and 『Crying in H Mart』, focusing on the interesting socio-cultural aspect in which works dealing with K-culture and historical context are created by Korean-American writers and directors and re-imported to Korea through global video platforms. These two works are suitable examples for analyzing recent trends and trends focusing on women’s immigration narratives, and have several things in common. First, the original authors of both works are Korean-American women; second, they deal with the female immigration narrative as the main narrative; and third, they depict the process of Korean identity inheritance through ‘Korean food (K-food).’ Both works portray the survival stories of immigrant women in Japan and the United States, respectively, while delving into the processes of identity formation and acquisition. They also reveal meaningful distinctions in these processes. The characters, burdened by the triple marginalization of being Asian, female, and immigrant, repeatedly confront insurmountable barriers that reaffirm the impossibility of assimilation. Yet, the authors, who share similar identities with their characters, have achieved remarkable success in the U.S. and globally, thereby rewriting the possibilities of female immigrant narratives from outside the works themselves. The resistance and subversive spirit toward Japan and the United States, subtly or overtly expressed within the narratives, persist beyond the works, creating a new point of reversal where the American Dream intersects with the global rise of K-culture. This emergent form of female immigrant narratives establishes itself as a social phenomenon, showcasing the cultural power and potential of “Koreanness” in the global market.
