1961년 출간된 『파시즘이란 무엇인가』는 전후 프랑스뿐만 아니라 유럽에서 가장 영향력 있는 파시스트 지식인 가운데 한 사람인 모리스 바르데슈(Maurice Bardèche)의 주저이다. 이 책에서 바르데슈는 전간기 고전적 파시즘뿐만 아니라 당대의 신파시즘을 비판하면서 보편적인 파시스트 이념을 재정립하려는 했다. 대부분의 역사가들은 이 저작이 신세대 극우파와 신파시스트들에게 큰 영향력을 행사했다는 점에 동의하면서도 정작 이 저작에 나타난 수정주의 파시즘의 성격을 천착하지 않았다. 이 논문에서 필자는 바르데슈의 수정주의 파시즘이 대단히 추상적이자 유토피아적 성격을 지니고 있으며 따라서 파시스트 이념을 재정립하겠다는 의도와는 달리 그의 수정주의는 구성적이라기보다는 해체적인 효과를 낳았다고 주장하고자 한다. 이 점에서 바르데슈의 수정주의는 신파시스트 이념을 공고히 하기 보다 오히려 포스트-파시즘으로의 이행을 촉진하는 역할을 했다.
Abstract
Published in 1961, What is Fascism? is magnum opus of Maurice Bardèche, one of the most influential post-war fascist intellectuals in Europe, as well as in France. In this work, Bardèche tried to reestablish the universal fascist ideology by criticizing not only the classical fascism but also various trends of contemporary neofascism. Most historians agreed that this work had a great influence on the new-generation extremists and neo-fascists, but they did not delve into the nature of the revisionist fascism in this work. In this paper I would like to argue that Bardèche’s revisionist fascism is abstract and utopian in nature, and therefore, unlike his intention of reestablishing the fascist ideology, his revisionism has a deconstructive effect rather than a reconstructive one. In this respect, I would like to suggest that Bardèche's revisionism promoted the transition to post-fascism rather than consolidating the neofascist ideology.
