Abstract
This study examines how social capital influences residents’ willingness to participate in community activities in the rural areas of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. In the context of population decline and weakening communal ties, the study emphasizes that revitalizing local communities requires not only policy efforts but also the restoration of trust and cooperative relationships among residents. Using survey data from long-term residents living in Jeju’s rural areas for more than ten years, the research applies a binary logistic regression model to explore how networks, trust, norms, and participation—as well as individual factors such as age, gender, residence, and birthplace consistency—affect participation intentions. The results show that trust enhances participation, whereas network and participation conditions have negative effects, implying that rigid or obligation-based networks may discourage new engagement. Among individual factors, younger generations and those with strong birthplace ties showed lower willingness to participate, suggesting that established relationship norms and a sense of obligation within familiar networks can restrain voluntary involvement. These findings indicate that the vitality of local communities depends more on relational trust and open interaction than on institutional frameworks. Policies aimed at rebuilding trust-based relationships, encouraging intergenerational engagement, and reinforcing residents’ sense of belonging will be essential to strengthening social capital and ensuring the sustainability of rural communities.
