Abstract
This study reinterprets Mao Zedong Thought within the contemporary frameworks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Using historical, comparative, and discourse analysis, it examines key elements of Maoist thought—self-reliant poverty alleviation, the integration of education and labor, women’s liberation, environmental perspectives, and internationalism—based on primary sources and prior research, and compares them with the 17 SDGs and core ESD principles. The findings show that Mao’s rural-centered poverty strategies relate to SDG 1 and community empowerment in ESD, while literacy campaigns and the linkage of education with labor correspond to SDG 4, especially SDG 4.7. Women’s liberation policies can be read as a historical reference for SDG 5. The environmental failures of the Great Leap Forward are reinterpreted as cautionary lessons for SDG 13 and SDG 15. Moreover, Maoist internationalism aligns with SDG 16 and SDG 17, supporting global citizenship education. This study contributes by reframing Mao Zedong Thought as a reflective learning resource, integrating East Asian ideas into SDGs and ESD discourse, and highlighting the transformative potential of education for sustainable development.
