Abstract

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the negative perception of Russia in Western films has generally remained unchanged or worsened. This trend is clearly evident in one of the latest French films. Jerome Salle's 2022 film Compromat is a representative work that takes Russia as its main setting and theme following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Like recent Hollywood films and films from other European countries, this film also reveals a negative perception of Putin's Russia. Furthermore, it shares some of the important aspects of the image of Russia that has appeared in French films over the past 35 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, thereby contributing to the formation and maintenance of a tradition in the representation of Russia in French cinema. In particular, the fact that the Siberian city of Irkutsk is set as the main backdrop in Compromat supports the idea that this film has a certain dialogic relationship with other French films set in Irkutsk. In addition, Compromat represents a recent example of French cinema's formation and presentation of negative images of Russia, as seen in its depiction of the protagonist's house arrest and prison life, which evoke the Gulag, a system of forced labor camps. However, while some studies exist on the image of France in Russian films, no research has been conducted on the perception of Russia in French films. Furthermore, although Russia's presence in French cinema has been clearly noticeable since shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and continues to this day, there has been no academic study of this presence. Therefore, this paper aims to examine in detail when and how the image of Russia was formed in modern French films and what meanings it carries. Additionally, it will specifically analyze how French films differ from those of other Western countries, such as Hollywood, in their representation of Russia.
