Abstract

This is a paper is written to specifically clarify the feature of nature and meaning of sense which appeared in the poems of poet Kim Jong-gil. Kim Jong-gil, who has been rated on the critical rhetoric of ‘oriental tradition’ and ‘sensual image’, is an unprolific poet who published 300 poems during 70 years which was the period when he kept writing poems. In his poem, nature functioned as the part of life-world and as an important base where he thought about his life. He dealt with concerns of daily life about family, disciples, and state of affairs through the yard of his house and nature things around his house. However, ultimately, nature existed as ‘unalterable value’ to him. Such nature is deeply connected with familism related to blood. This tradition from ancestors to himself, and descendants is the core of relations of poet and social ethics. Tradition of such relation based on blood has the feature of not only ethic but also spirit. Therefore, it is intensified and represented to the inside of personal connection with a dead ancestor. On the other hand, most of Kim Jong-gil’s poems were written after sixty, but these poem which gave form to so-called advanced age sensibly expressed the inner side of the old with concise language and abstained wording. Especially, condensed sensory images which appeared in the plain and clear language embodied the inner face of poet to death much vividly. We can see meaning of the oriental nature and deep inner sense in his poems of old age. In this deep and gentle world of advanced age which went off regardless of the flow of times at all, we can experience over and over again the death of thought and sense that clear language shows.
