디지털 이미지텔링에 의한 영화의 시각이미지 고찰: C. 놀란의 <프레스티지>, <인셉션>, <인터스텔라>를 중심으로

본고는 이미지 연구 혹은 스토리텔링의 하위 방법론을 넘어서는 이미지텔링을 논의하기 위하여, 디지털 이미지의 특성을 포괄하는 ‘디지털 이미지텔링’을 제시한다. 이는 복제성, 테크네성, 하이브리드성으로 대표되는 디지털 이미지의 특성을 지닌 디지털 이미지텔링을 학문적 방법론으로 활용하기 위한 시도이기도 하다. 따라서 본 연구는 디지털 이미지로 인해 강화되는 전달방식을 의미하는 디지털 이미지텔링을 활용하여, 크리스토퍼 놀란 감독의 영화 <프레스티지>, <인셉션>, <인터스텔라>을 분석하였다. 마술적 이미지로부터 기술적 이미지로의 이행을 시각이미지로 재현한 <프레스티지>, 등장인물과 상호주체적 기능을 수행하는 공간이미지를 구현한 <인셉션>, 그리고 과거의 시공간을 포괄하는 사차원 이미지를 가시적으로 선보인 <인터스텔라>는 가상과 현실의 모호한 경계 및 시공간을 넘나드는 다층적 시각이미지를 구현함에 있어, 상기한 디지털 이미지의 특성을 보이고 있다. 놀란 감독이 이처럼 시각이미지의 재현방식을 변화시켜온 까닭은, 디지털 기술로 인한 이미지의 변화와 매체의 전이 양상을 작품에 투영하려했기 때문이다. 결과적으로 각 영화에 나타난 시공간 시각이미지는 앞서 살펴본 디지털 이미지의 특성을 순차적으로 반영하면서, 단계별로 강화된 디지털 이미지텔링을 재현하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 범람하는 디지털 이미지를 다루는 디지털 이미지텔링을 통한 영화분석의 가능성을 모색한다는 점에 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This study explores digital imagetelling with the characteristics of digital image not to be one of the methodology of the image studies or storytelling. So to speak, it tries to define digital imagetelling as independent scientific methodology based on the characteristics of duplication, téchnē, hybrid of digital image. To look over digital imagetelling including the way of delivery of digital image, this article analyzed Christopher Nolan’s three films, Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar. These films are appropriate for this study because they represent visual images which show the obscure boundary of cyber space and real world. We can see the process from magic image to technical image in Prestige, interactivity with characters and space images in Inception, and the forth dimensional image in Interstellar. This is because Nolan tries to reflect the aspect of media transformation to his works. Visual images in each films perform imagetelling of film as a unique medium, and that is the reflection of the change of image by digital technology. New academic word needs to accept recent trend of culture, and then digital imagetelling is the one of scientific methodology that deals with digital image around all of us.
