Abstract

This study explored the potential of museums to serve as transdisciplinary learning environments in the era of artificial intelligence and digital transformation. It was conducted by developing, implementing, and analyzing the effects of a museum-based arts-integrated education program applying Julia Marshall’s art-research-integration (ARI) model on learners’ creativity and convergence competencies. Through a literature review, this study examined the concept of creativity and convergence competencies and identified three subcomponents: creative ideation, integrative thinking, and value creation. The literature review also showed the educational effectiveness of the ARI model and its applicability in museum contexts, thereby establishing the validity of this study. The educational program was implemented with 13 middle school students in grades 8 and 9 at schools in Seoul over six sessions across three museums. Given the cyclical structure of the ARI model, exhibitions and teaching-learning activities were integrated to enable learners to experience multiple perspectives, have various sensory experiences, construct meaning, and develop new insights. Data was collected through participant observation, research journals, recordings, mobile worksheets, and student outputs. It was qualitatively analyzed to trace changes in learners’ competencies. The findings were as follows. First, students showed enhanced creative ideation through ideas they generated and questions they formulated based on things they learned and experienced through exhibitions. Second, they showed improved integrative thinking by attempting to interpret and approach exhibition content from multiple perspectives and knowledge domains. Third, they showed increased value creation by reconstructing exhibition experiences from their own viewpoints and creatively expressing them through digital media. These results show that ARI - based museum education is effective at fostering creativity and convergence competencies. This study’s results can be applied to learners of diverse ages and backgrounds and can be used to strengthen educators ’ expertise and develop programs that reflect individual museum characteristics. The program and practices proposed in this study can be expanded upon and adapted for use in educational settings, cultivating learners’ creativity and convergence competencies.
