Abstract
This study classified latent types based on the levels of parental achievement pressure and child abuse, and examined the characteristics of children, parents, and households that explain the probability of belonging to each type. Data were drawn from the 15th wave (2022) of the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC), focusing on students in the 9th grade (middle school third year). Latent profile analysis (LPA), ordinary least squares (OLS), and multinomial logistic regression were employed for the analyses. The main findings are as follows. First, the LPA identified four distinct profiles: (1) high achievement pressure and low abuse, (2) low achievement pressure and low abuse, (3) high achievement pressure and emotional abuse, and (4) high achievement pressure with both physical and emotional abuse. Second, the probability of being classified into the “low achievement pressure and low abuse” group-the most prevalent type-was higher among girls, those not classified as high-risk smartphone users, those whose mothers reported lower general stress levels, those with more siblings, and those with lower private education expenditures. Third, children identified as belonging to the high-risk smartphone usage group were more likely to fall into the other three profiles-those involving higher levels of achievement pressure and varying forms of abuse-compared to the baseline group. Based on these findings, this study provides policy implications and directions for future research.
