Abstract

This study examined the narrative characteristics of the “Life of Jesus” and “Life of Shakyamuni” included in the "Religious Fairy Tale Collection" of Shogakuseizenshu published in 1928.In the early modern period, Western culture and ideas flowed into Japan. Under the influence of Christianity, traditional Buddhism was newly established as a religion, and Sunday schools were founded. The modern national education system was introduced in the educational sphere, establishing the subject of “moral education” that emphasized ethics and requiring “cultivation” for the formation of “character.” And from the discourse on philosophical understanding of religion and cultivation of character, interest in its representative figures, Jesus and Shakyamuni, grew. Attention focused on the historical figures of Jesus and Shakyamuni, leading to the flourishing of “religious literature” in the Taisho era. The “Life of Jesus” included in the “Religious Fairy Tale Collection” omits the conclusion of the “Resurrection”. This reflects Western scholarship concerning the “historical Jesus”. ”The Life of Shakyamuni” retained the traditional format of the Buddha's biography while reflecting the ideas of modern Buddhism, which sought to emphasize rational and scientific thought. As a result, we observed an effort to establish the image of the “human Shakyamuni” while eliminating supernatural depictions.
