Abstract
This study seeks to clarify the historical trajectory of local groups in the Gimhae Bay region following their subjugation by Silla by reviewing the characteristics of greenglazed pottery of the Northern Dynasties–Sui period excavated from stone chamber tombs constructed along the southern coast during the sixth and seventh centuries, when the Gaya polities were incorporated into Silla. A green-glazed long-stemmed cup with linkedpearl decoration excavated from Tomb M2 in Zone 2 of the Samsan Park site in Gimhae has been identified within the former sphere of Geumgwan Gaya, together with a greenglazed linked-pearl-decorated bowl recovered from Tomb No. 470 at the Seok-dong 1 site in Changwon. These vessels were produced and circulated between the mid-sixth and early seventh centuries, and their occurrence is closely associated with groups buried in Silla-style horizontal stone chamber tombs established in the former territory of Geumgwan Gaya. Together with contemporary evidence for port infrastructure, including piers and roads at the Guandong-ri fortress site, the combination of green-glazed long-stemmed cups and Northern Dynasties–Sui belt ornaments excavated from Silla-style stone chamber tombs at the Gusan-dong site in Gimhae indicates that the group buried in Tomb M2 at the Samsan Park site is more likely to represent a local elite group that participated in intermediary trade between Silla and Wa, rather than a kin group of local administrators dispatched from the Silla capital during the transitional period of the southern coastal Gaya polities. However, some groups specializing in port trade around Jinhae–Gimhae Bay in antiquity may also have participated in the much broader interregional trade network led by Silla from the mid-6th to the early 7th century. This is inferred from grave good patterns in combination with Silla horizontal stone chamber tombs and the Nuamri-Sui Dynasty-type metal belt found at Geumgwan Gaya sites.
