Abstract

The study examined the effects of maternal smartphone overreliance and depression on parenting behavior and investigated the moderating role of self-esteem in this relationship. To this end, data from 2,104 participants from the 2nd Korean Early Childhood Education and Care Panel (2023) were analyzed. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0, including descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and simple regression analysis. The significance of the moderating effect was verified using model 1 of PROCESS macro v4.2. The analysis results showed that, first, mothers’ excessive reliance on smartphones had a negative effect on self-esteem and parenting behavior. Second, mothers’ depression had a negative effect on self-esteem and parenting behavior. Third, mothers’ self-esteem was found to have a statistically significant moderating effect on the influence of maternal depression on parenting behavior. In conclusion, this study is meaningful in that it improves the positive parenting behavior of mothers and provides basic data for healthy growth and development of infants by revealing the influence of psychological variables (depression, self-esteem) and smartphone dependence on parenting behavior of mothers with infants.
