Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of maternal smartphone overdependence on children’s depression, focusing on the mediating role of parenting attitudes. To this end, data from the third wave of the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), specifically from a sample of 2,185 mother-child dyads, were analyzed. The analysis was conducted in the following sequence: (1) descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, (2) mediation analysis, and (3) bootstrapping to verify mediation and path effects. The results revealed that maternal smartphone overdependence had a significant positive direct effect on children’s depression. Both positive and negative parenting attitudes were found to significantly influence children’s depression. Specifically, positive parenting attitudes were negatively affected by maternal smartphone overdependence, yet still served as a mediating factor that reduced children’s depression. In contrast, negative parenting attitudes were positively influenced by maternal smartphone overdependence and, in turn, contributed to an increase in children’s depression. These findings suggest the need for interventions targeting maternal smartphone use and parenting attitudes as a means to promote children’s mental health.
