Abstract
This study reviews the Japanese Government-General of Korea-compiled『Elementary School National Reader』(“朝一” or “Joil," 1912∼1915) during the Japanese colonial rule of Joseon, and Japan’s Japanese language textbook of National Reader, Simsangsohakdokbon, (“国定一” or “Gukjeongil,” 1904∼1909) to present a comparative analysis of the textbook overview, contents, and Chinese characters to be learned during the four years of Elementary School. Gukjeongil designated 500 mandatory Chinese characters to be learned according to the Enforcement Rule of the 1900 Revised Elementary School Ordinance. However, an analysis of the Chinese characters revealed that the designated Chinese characters amounted to 873, which is 373 more than 500. Japanese children were required to learn these Chinese characters during the four years of Elementary School. In the meantime, an analysis of Chinese characters run in Joil revealed that 1,639 characters were used. This number is about three times the number of the designated characters in Gukjeongil (500 characters), and twice that of the actually learned Chinese characters (873). A comparative analysis of 1,639 Chinese characters used in Joil and those in Gukjeongil revealed that of the designated 500 characters, 487 or 97% were used, and of the actually learned 873 characters, 779 or 89% were used. Chinese characters, derived from Gukjeongil, were used like this: per page, 1.5 characters were used on average, and the total number of characters used was 11.7 on average. With regard to Chinese characters, derived from Joil, per page, 1.9 characters were used on average, and the total number of characters used were 34.8 on average; thus, Joil used Chinese characters far more frequently than Gukjeongil(11,7 characters). This study focused on the comparative analysis of Chinese characters used in the two textbooks.
