Abstract

This study contrasts the meanings of the homonymous Sino-Korean words 'success' and 'failure' in Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese from a distributional semantics perspective, examining the semantic differences across languages. To achieve this, the study utilizes the Leipzig Corpora Collection (LCC) to extract sentences containing 'success' and 'failure' in each language, followed by FP-Growth and n-gram analysis to explore co-occurrence patterns and contextual environments. The results show that in Korean, 'success' is portrayed as an achievement by the subject, while 'failure' is expressed as a failure to meet goals. In Chinese, 'success' is associated with events or tasks, and 'failure' is framed as administrative failure. In Japanese, 'success' is related to technical and business achievements, while 'failure' tends to reflect personal experiences. In Vietnamese, 'success' emphasizes economic achievements and media-related outcomes, while 'failure' focuses on defeat and competitive failures. The contextual usage of 'success' and 'failure' in each language reflects cultural and social differences, and this study provides an in-depth analysis of the semantic shifts of homonymous Sino-Korean words and the environmental factors contributing to these changes.
