아리스토텔레스의 『정치학』 2권에서 스파르타 여성에 대한 비판

초록

아리스토텔레스는 『정치학』 2권 9장에서 스파르타를 10 가지 주제를 가지고 비판한다. 이것들 중 다루는 양과 깊이에서 가장 두드러진 것은 여성에 대한 비판, 더 정확히 말하면, 여성의 방종(anesis)에 대한 비판이다. 아리스토텔레스에 따르면, 스파르타의 입법자는 일정한 법과 훈련을 통해서 남성들을 규율과 통제된 삶을 살게 했지만, 여성들에게 이것들을 적용하는 데 실패했다. 그런 이유로 여성들은 방종, 사치, 무절제에 빠져들게 된다. 이런 여성들의 방종과 사치는 스파르타 전체를 금전애호(philochrêmatia)의 폴리스로 만들었다. 그 이유는 스파르타 남성 같은 호전적인 사람은 성적 교접을 추구하기 때문이다. 또한 여성들의 방종은 여성지배(gunaikokratia)를 추동한다. 폴리스를 남성들이 지배하는 것으로 보이지만 실제로 남성들을 뒤에서 장악하고 있는 사람은 여성이 되며, 결국 여성이 폴리스를 지배하는 것과 다름없기 때문이다. 더 나아가, 여성들은 상속법과 지참금 제도 덕분에 전체 토지의 40%(5분의 2)를 차지할 수 있었고, 이것이 부의 불평등을 초래했다. 이런 불평등으로 인하여 시민들의 감소(oliganthropia)가 발생했고, 이것이 스파르타를 쇠락의 길로 들어서게 되는 원인을 제공한다. 이와 같은 아리스토텔레스의 비판들은 폴리스 내에서 여성에 대한 잘못된 규정이 어떤 문제를 발생시켰는지에 대한 고찰이고, 여성의 방종 문제는 여성에 대한 입법자의 최초 규정의 미비로 인한 것이라고 규정하는 것이다. 요컨대, 현재 스파르타의 문제는 폴리스 자체 내 있었던 최초 문제가 시간적 계기를 통하여 발현된 것이다.

Abstract

Aristotle criticizes Sparta with 10 subjects in his Politics, Book II, chapter 9. In particular, the salient features in the amount and depth of discussion can be found to be criticizing women, or more exactly the license (anesis) of women. According to Aristotle, the Spartan lawgivers made Spartan men live their highly disciplined and controlled lives under laws and through discipline; however, the same was not true of Spartan women because of the absence of such legal and disciplinary arrangement. Such being the case, women in Sparta were apt to wallow in license, luxury, and intemperance; which would make the whole Sparta a ‘love-of-money’ (philochrêmatia) polis (city-state). The reason is that such warlike people as the men in Sparta indulged in sexual intercourse with women; so Spartan women's license drove the gynecocracy (gunaikokratia). Sparta appeared to be a male-dominated society; but actually, the city-state resembled a female-dominated society since it was women that could take control of men behind the scenes under such an atmosphere. Furthermore, the Spartan inheritance law and dowry system made it possible for women to own 40% (two-fifths) of the land in Sparta, which would aggravate the inequality of wealth within the polis. This unequal distribution of wealth set off population phenomena such as a scarcity of male citizens in Sparta (oliganthropia) that would lead to the downfall of Sparta. Thus, Aristotle’s criticisms of Spartan women are reflections on how the defects in regulating them had raised problems in Sparta; these criticisms also imply that the problems of women's license originated from the lawgiver’s political failure to them. In short, the problem in Sparta was originally rooted in the city-state itself; and in the end, manifested after a long time.
