플라톤은 남성과 여성이 성별의 차이로 인해 역할의 차이를 갖지만, 그럼에도 남성과 여성은 평등하다고 주장한다. 하지만 본성에 따른 성별의 차이 또는 성적 차이가 가져오는 사회적/정치적 역할의 차이는 결국 플라톤의 철학에서 평등성의 분열로 이해되어야 한다. 이런 해석은 부분적으로 아리스토텔레스에 대한 해석에 근거한다. 즉, 여성의 본성에 관한 아리스토텔레스의 견해가 여성 차별적으로 이해되는 것과 동일한 맥락에서, 플라톤의 견해도 그렇게 이해되어야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 논의를 통해, 아래에서 논자는 플라톤의 『국가』 5권을 중심으로 그의 여성관이 여성 우호적으로만 설명될 수는 없다고 주장한다. 주지하듯이, 여성에 관한 그의 진술들은 우호적인 것들도 있고 차별적인 것들도 있으므로, 사실상 어떤 해석이 제시되든 반론의 여지가 있다. 따라서 논자는 여성에 관한 플라톤의 일반적인 진술들을 분석하고 검토하기보다는 여성의 본성에 관한 진술들에 초점을 맞추고, 아리스토텔레스의 여성관에 대한 해석 방법과 기준을 검토함으로써, 『국가』 5권에 나타난 플라톤의 여성관이 여성 차별적으로 해석될 여지가 있음을 보인다.
Abstract
Plato claims for sexual egalitarianism by saying that, although men and women have sexual differences and so social and political differences, they basically have the same nature. As for this claim, I suggest that their sex difference which calls for their social and political difference should be understood as the destruction of equality in Plato’s philosophy. This interpretation is partially relying on the interpretation of Aristotle’s view of women. That is, as Aristotle’s understanding of women’s nature is to be understood as representing sexism, Plato’s understanding should be understood in the same way. On the basis of this interpretation, I shall conclude that Plato’s view of women presented in Bk. V of the Republic is not quite egalitarian. As noted, in his dialogues, some of his statements on women are egalitarian, and others inegalitarian. Therefore, by focusing on Plato’s statements specifically on women’s nature rather than his general statements on women as a whole and, also, by examining the method and criterion of interpreting Aristotle view of women, I shall conclude that Plato’s view of women in Bk. V is inegalitarian.
