Abstract

Through analyzing the role of the citizen as presented by Aristotle, we will examine the conditions of citizenship and discuss the limits of cognitive injustice due to identity bias by questioning the legitimacy of political rule and ruled. First of all, the Aristotelian citizen, unlike the traditional definition of citizen, must have the ability to participate in deliberative and judicial offices. However, the ability to deliberate and judge is only fully possessed by free adult males, whereas for slaves, women, and children this ability is either entirely absent, lacks authority, or is incompletely developed. Therefore, they do not have citizenship because, fundamentally, no civic role can be expected of them. Second, Aristotle's exclusion of natural slaves from citizenship is related to their total lack of deliberation faculties, but this cannot operate independently of the other virtues of the intellect. The natural slave is meant to be a subhuman being, or something less human, or something closer to an animal than a free man. However, he seems to be an uncanny being whose actual existence is unlikely. Aristotle's concept of natural slave seems to be a logical setting for a slave’s relationship with his master. He is unlikely to exist in reality, but if he did, it would be natural for him to be subject to his master. Finally, Aristotle attempts to justify the role of women by transforming the nature of political rule: he applies it to the relationship between wife and husband, transforming it from a mutually alternating rule to a fixed rule by one party. This is because men are seen as fit to give orders, because they possess practical wisdom (phronesis) as a virtue, and because the value of work determines what men are fit to do. Fundamentally, Aristotle did not grant citizenship to women because of a prejudice against women's intellectual abilities, which is a kind of negative identity prejudice. This epistemic injustice is closely related to ‘circumstantial epistemic bad luck’.
