이 논문은 아리스토텔레스가 제시하는 최선의 국가의 인식론적 조건들에 대한 검토를 통해 국가의 구성원들의 공동선에 대해 검토하는 것을 목표로 한다. 첫째, 아리스토텔레스는 『정치학』 7권에서 최선의 국가를 만들기 위한 인식론적 조건으로 ‘학문적 지식(episteme)’과 ‘합리적 선택(prohairesis)’을 제시한다. 학문적 지식은 다양하게 변동하는 정치적 상황을 설명하는 논증적이고 필연적 이론으로 제시되며, 합리적 선택도 정치적 상황을 숙고하여 실천하는데 결정적인 요소가 된다. 특히 아리스토텔레스가 시민의 조건으로 삼는 심의능력은 합리적 선택과 실천적 지혜의 전제가 되며 필수요소이다. 둘째, 아리스토텔레스가 제시하는 최선의 국가의 목표를 한편으로 [A] ‘공동선’과 ‘공동이익’, 다른 한편으로 [B] ‘탁월성’과 ‘좋은 삶’을 중심으로 분석하여 진정한 의미의 시민 외에 여성은 성품의 덕과 지성의 덕도 탁월하게 발휘할 수 없고, 엄밀히 정치적 삶과 관조적 삶을 사는 것도 불가능함을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
In this article, I would like to examine the common good of the members of the state through a review of the best epistemological conditions of the state presented by Aristotle. First, Aristotle presents knowledge (episteme) and rational choice (prohairesis) as epistemological conditions for making the best state. Knowledge is presented as an argumentative and inevitable theory that explains various fluctuating political situations, and rational choices also become a decisive factor in considering and practicing political situations. In particular, the ability to deliberate, which Aristotle regards as a condition of citizenship, is a prerequisite and essential element of rational choice and practical wisdom. Second, Aristotle’s the goals of the best state were analyzed focusing on [A] ‘common good’ and ‘common interest’ on the one hand, and [B] ‘excellence’ and ‘good life’ on the other. Women cannot demonstrate the virtues of character and intelligence, and it becomes impossible to live a strictly political life and contemplative life.
