Abstract
Aristotle explains why women cannot have political rights by their very “nature”. This is very precarious because it approaches women and men in an essentialist way. This article aims to analyze and criticize the reasons Aristotle argues that women cannot have political rights and related controversies. I analyzed Aristotle's argument on three propositions. First, women do not have the same parts of the soul as men (A). Aristotle sets the criteria for (A) as the deliberative ability (bouleutikon). Although a woman has deliberative ability, she is not as dominant as a man. Second, women do not have the same virtues as men (B). Although they are called by the same name, they are of different kinds. Third, women by nature should be dominated by men (C). In order to criticize Aristotle's argument, I analyze (A1) essential cause and (A2) empirical cause. (B) necessarily comes from (A). Aristotle asserts that the whole of female excellence has the same name as the whole of male excellence, but is of a completely different kind. According to Aristotle, (C) is asserted on the grounds of (A) and (B). (C) is based on (C1) that everything is 'by nature' to be dominated and dominated and (C2) that men are by nature superior to women. Aristotle's fallacy consists in transforming phenomenological differences into ontological differences and explaining differences in degree as essential differences.
