Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the motif of rumor in Mark’s Gospel from the social scientific perspective. Markan scholarship has failed to pay attention to the rumor motifs in the Gospel. However, I argue that the rumor is one of the central motifs in Mark and that it penetrates the whole Gospel, Jesus is at the center of the rumor, and by means of rumor, Mark increases Jesus’ socio-political power. Modern rumor theories that show what characteristics rumors have offer a theoretical framework in which one can assess rumors in the Greco-Roman world, and can help us recognize rumors hidden in the Gospel. In this paper, I maintain that (1) rumors appears approximately fifty times, (2) rumors display their collective, elaborative, rapid, anonymous, expressive, and political characteristics, and (3) Jesus’ increased fame through rumors is closely associated with his socio-political power.
