Abstract
Mark uses the ‘way’ as a literary motif to deliver the message of sufferingand cross in order to realize the peace of God. The peace of God makes stopevery kinds of violence and oppression to save all kinds of people, even includingthe unjust. Thus, the way of suffering and cross is the way of God,and invites us to participate in God’s work of salvation. This study regards theGospel of Mark as the whole story and reads it in terms of social, political, cultural, religious perspectives with the theme of ‘suffering’ and ‘peace.’Jesus’ suffering is a natural consequence out of his teaching and practiceof the reign of God which are basically against the Roman empire. Jesus criticizesboth the Roman empire and the Jewish leaders who are collaboratedwith the Roman empire. However, Jesus’ confrontation was to go on the wayof suffering and cross because his way of making the peace of God is totallydifferent from the Pax Romana which was sustained by violent militarypower. Mark criticizes the reign of the Roman empire, resists it using the imperialterms such as Ἀρχή, Εὐαγγελίον, Βασιλεία, Εἰρήνη etc as counter-images,and suggests the alternative way of God’s reign and discipleship.
