본 연구는 조선후기와 일제강점기 문헌에 기록된 숭람(崧藍)의 재배법과 니람(泥藍) 염색법을 현재의 한국 기후 환경에서 실험하고, 그 과정을 정리한 것이다. 숭람은 전통 남염(藍染)에서 니람 제작에 적합한 염료식물로, 조선후기 『해동농서』, 『임원십육지』, 『오주연문장전산고』 등 고문헌과 일제강점기 『한국토지농산조사보고』를 통해 숭람의 품종적 특성과 재배법, 제람법을 검토하였다. 이를 바탕으로 숭람의 파종, 생육, 종자 채취 등 재배 실험을 수행하고, 매염제(잿물, 패각회) 제작, 니람 만들기, 염액 조성 등 전통 남염법의 재현 과정을 단계별로 정리하였다. 이러한 연구는 전통 염색기술 복원의 구체적 사례로서 의의가 있으며, 오늘날 전승이 단절된 숭람 재배 및 니람 염색법에 대한 실증적 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다. 특히 한복 제작에 사용된 염료식물과 염색기술 복원 연구로서, 현대 한복문화의 재료 연구 및 천연염색 기술의 계승 가능성을 제고하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This study aims to empirically reconstruct the cultivation methods of Isatis tinctoria (known as 崧藍, or Sungram) and the traditional Jeon-dyeing techniques (泥藍, or Niram) recorded in texts from the late Joseon dynasty and documents from the Japanese colonial period. These historical practices were tested under the contemporary climatic conditions of Korea. In traditional indigo dyeing, Isatis tinctoria was recognized as an ideal dye plant for producing Jeon, a fermented indigo pigment. The study examined the characteristics of Isatis tinctoria, its cultivation methods, and dyeing techniques by analyzing historical records. Following this review, experimental cultivation was conducted, which included sowing, growth management, and seed harvesting. The study also meticulously reconstructed the traditional dyeing process in a step-by-step manner. This process involved preparing alkaline mordants such as lye and shell ash to produce Jeon, as well as formulating dyeing solutions. This study presents a practical case for restoring traditional dyeing techniques. It provides foundational data on the cultivation of Isatis tinctoria and Jeon-dyeing, practices that have largely been forgotten today. Notably, the findings contribute to the study of natural dye materials used in the making of Hanbok. They also support the preservation and contemporary application of traditional dyeing techniques within modern Hanbok culture.
