Abstract
This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the aesthetics of dehuman ization as represented in Crystal Pite’s contemporary dance work, Flight Pattern. The aesthetics of dehumanization refers to an artistic strategy that expresses the structural problems of modern society—namely social alienation and mechanization—by suppressing or eliminating human emotion, autonomy, and individuality. Grounded in Marx’s theory of ali enation, André Lepecki’s concept of Exhausting Dance, and Susan Foster’s theory of Choreographing Empathy, this research examines how repetitive mechanical movement, spatial restriction, emotional sup pression, and the loss of individuality are choreographically embodied. Through detailed scene and video analysis, the study investigates how the dehumanized body functions as a symbolic site of critique within con temporary dance. The findings reveal that Flight Pattern not only reflects the realities of dehumanization but also demonstrates the potential of dance as a critical medium that engages with socio-political discourse through corporeal representation.
