Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the resistance discourse of Maria Stewart, who made public speeches on political issues and wrote Religion and the Pure Principles of Morality: the Sure Foundation on which We Must Build. By analyzing the contents of Maria Stewart's resistance messages, including the emancipation of blacks and women, I trace how a black woman attempted to avoid the discrimination of race and gender under the system of slavery in America. The most notable point in the way of Stewart’s resistance was in solidarity with William Garrison, who played a key role in the triumphant abolition movement. As his case provided a useful example of cooperation between whites and blacks in the abolition movement, it had an important meaning. She inherited the form of her mentor, David Walker, and claimed the rights of women as well as the ‘cause’ of the abolition of slavery through cooperation with Garrison. Stewart’s ‘rhetoric of resistance’ with regard to revolutionary spirit, the value of education, urgency and necessity of freedom of blacks, their union, and the special responsibilities of black women reflected the diverse and complex strata of American society through a black woman’s gaze in the early 19th century and further reproduced the voice of a blackwoman’s resistance.
