Abstract
When dividing <Nonggawolryeongga> into three meaningful units: ‘Nongga’(farmhouse), ‘Wolryeong’(lunar calendar), and ‘Ga’(song), previous discussions about the creation motives of this work can explain the term ‘Nongga,’ but it seems challenging to address the other two keywords. Therefore, this paper explores the question of why a new type of agricultural text combining the Korean script, the lunar calendar format, and the literary genre of lyrics emerged in the 19th century. The summary of the findings is as follows: First, during the late Joseon period, rural intellectuals prioritized experiential knowledge gained through labor over theoretical knowledge that could be acquired through agricultural texts regarding the technical aspects of farming processes. However, they argued that for areas of theoretical knowledge that could not be mastered through labor—such as the precise timing of agricultural activities and the types of tasks to be performed during those times—intervention from knowledgeable individuals or the establishment of mechanisms to obtain such knowledge was necessary. Jeong Hak-yu’s <Nonggawolryeongga> corresponds to this, as the work focuses on presenting the appropriate timing for agricultural tasks and the types of tasks to be performed at those times rather than the specific methods of farming. This aligns precisely with the perspective of rural intellectuals who emphasized the issue of ‘timeliness.’ Second, the scale of land ownership and cultivation among farmers in the late Joseon period became increasingly standardized downward as the 19th century progressed. While the demand for land was high, the supply was limited, leading landowners to reduce the scale of rented land per individual while increasing the number of tenants, which meant that the number of farming subjects who had to manage the overall farming process grew. Furthermore, as agricultural management shifted from small-scale farming to mixed farming during this period, the proportion of commoners and yangban tenants increased. This change in agricultural management also correlates with the rise in the number of households directly overseeing farming, indicating that the number of individuals who needed to have various agricultural knowledge increased. However, until that time, no agricultural texts in Korean had been identified, so the demand for precise timing and knowledge of agricultural tasks during those periods, along with the continuous increase in those who needed to know it, aligns perfectly with the existence of <Nonggawolryeongga>, which was created in the format of a lunar calendar in Korean. Third, farmers in the late Joseon period attempted to supplement their reduced income due to the decrease in arable land by increasing their involvement in dry-field farming. In response to the reduction in cultivation scale, they diversified the types of crops produced, leading to an increase in the number and complexity of tasks that individuals had to manage compared to before. This signifies that the amount of information an independent farming subject needed to know increased, which is likely related to Jeong Hak-yu’s choice of Ga-sa rather than Si-jo when creating <Nonggawolryeongga>.
