Abstract

This paper critically examines existing scholarship that characterized <NonggaWollyeongga> as a work “separated from the reality of farmers.” Contrary to previous arguments, this study asserts that the work is closely tied to the reality of farmers. To do this, I compared it with a series of agricultural texts and classified books focused on the lives of farmers compiled by the Gyeonghwa scholar class from the late 18th century, just before this work was created. The provisional conclusions reached through this examination can be summarized as follows: Firstly, while the series of agricultural texts compiled by the elite class, such as Park Ji-won, Park Je-ga, and Seo Yu-gu, can be categorized as theory-centric universal agricultural texts aiming to apply a single farming method to all regions, Jeong Hak-yu’s <NonggaWollyeongga> is much closer to a field-centric regional agricultural text that emphasizes farmers’ experience based on regional differences. The former advocated for the reform of agricultural tools and the innovation of farming methods and showed a strong distrust towards experienced farmers in the fields; in contrast, the latter, instead of mentioning agricultural tools and methods, only presented the appropriate timing for performing various farming processes and accepted the various traditional practices held by experienced farmers as meaningful. Second, among the various individuals included in the general term ‘farmers,’ the <NonggaWolryeongga> focuses on tenant farmers who cultivate the land of others and pay the proceeds to the landowners. This point seems closely related to the various elements that make up this work, such as text, form, and genre. First, this work is recorded in Hangul, and its content is focused on the lives of the tenant farmers, who constitute the absolute majority of farmers, suggesting that <NonggaWolryeongga> serves as a ‘very rare’ agricultural text in Hangul for those who cannot read classical Chinese. Next, regarding the form of the monthly age system, since it targets tenant farmers familiar with agricultural work, there was no need to present specific methods for each agricultural process from the outset. Instead, this work focuses on presenting the precise timing needed for farming and the types of agricultural tasks to be carried out during those times. Lastly, there is the issue of the literary genre of Ga-sa. During the late Joseon period, tenant farmers faced an increased absolute amount of time required for farming due to changes in the agricultural environment, as well as a significant intellectual burden related to agricultural policies for the efficient allocation of labor and the types of tasks to be performed in adjacent time frames. It would have been difficult for the short form of poetry known as Si-jo to accommodate this; in this regard, <NonggaWolryeongga> is closely connected to the lives of tenant farmers in the late Joseon period.
