초록
This study investigates putative English initialisms in the Korean language. Initialisms are words formed from the initial letters of words or phrases, including both alphabetisms and acronyms. Focusing on forms that employ Roman alphabet letters within Korean, this study analyzes the creation and usage of these initialisms in terms of their morphological structures and pronunciations. It is shown that alphabet-based initialisms are hybrids that combine both Korean and English initialism formation processes. Moreover, alphabet-based initialisms created in Korean exhibit characteristics of English initialisms, encompassing alphabetisms, acronyms and backronyms (reverse acronyms). These neologisms are argued to arise from analogy to English initialisms, while simultaneously reflecting the linguistic flexibility and creativity of Korean speakers.
