초록
This paper discovered and analyzed the version of Taengniji transcribed by Chiwon Hwang Sang (1788–1870) in the 1860s. Known as the Chiwon edition, the book is more of a revised edition rather than a transcribed version. Chiwon edited the content of Lee Jung-hwan’s Taengniji according to his views and interpretation. More than one-third of the Chiwon edition is not found in the original work. Only one out of the two volumes has been discovered. The Chiwon edition reflects new geographical information from the period after the publication of Lee Jung-hwan’s Taengniji, and added his views as an intellectual living in a village of Jeolla Province. He was highly influenced by his master, Jeong Yak-yong, in terms of geographical understanding and knowledge. In addition, under the influence of Yu Jung-rim’s Dongguksansurok, he reorganized the chapters, narratives, and structure. Based on a critical interpretation of Taengniji, he re-evaluated the northwest area of Jeolla Province, added vast amounts of regional information, and assessed regions with a different perspective from that of Lee Jung-hwan. The Chiwon edition, which contains Hwang Sang’s original views and new information, can be considered a fresh addition to 19th century human geography. Another point to note is that Chiwon’s views are rooted in the teachings of the Dasan School, led by his master Jeong Yak-yong. The significance of this paper lies in discovering and introducing the Chiwon edition, which serves as an important work of human geography from the mid-19th century. It is expected to contribute to future research on mid-19th century human geography, the propagation and influence of Taengniji, and the Dasan School’s study of geography.
