Abstract
As Korea’s population ages, the need to provide technology education for older learners is increasing, yet effective teaching methods remain insufficiently explored. To this end, the present study was conducted in two stages: diagnosing the problem and exploring the applicability of corresponding improvement measures. Study 1 involved a focus group interview with 10 older learners who had received technology education, followed by a thematic analysis identifying challenges. The findings showed that the older learners (1) faced difficulties with personalized learning due to instructor-centered teaching, (2) exhibited low motivation to review the material, lacked adequate support to overcome learning challenges, and (3) valued topics relevant to their daily lives. In Study 2, real-life problem-solving tasks were designed and implemented, and the experiences of the same participants were analyzed after task completion using the same procedure as in Study 1 to explore effective teaching methods. The results showed that (1) practical topics increased motivation, and (2) detailed explanations and visual aids improved review efficacy. However, negative results included (1) task completion difficulties due to low relevance and busy schedules, (2) issues with information transfer and collaboration, and (3) insufficient support during task engagement. Based on these findings, this study proposes design principles for real-life problem-solving learning using smartphones.
