통영 오귀새남굿의 황천문답은 망자가 저승에서 겪는 여정을 다룬 무가로, 망자가 저승의 판관 앞에서 올바른 문답을 수행함으로써 극락에 이를 수 있기를 기원하는 제차이다. 황천문답의 핵심은 망자의 죄업을 씻어 극락으로 인도하는 과정에 있으며, 이를 통해 오귀새남굿의 의례적 의미가 더욱 강조된다. 본 연구는 황천문답의 구조와 특징을 분석하고, 필사본을 비교하여 선본(善本)을 추출하여 변형된 무가의 올바른 이해를 돕는 데 중점을 두었다. 그 결과『어정설법문』이 가장 오래된 무가본이자 의미가 가장 명확하게 전달되는 선본으로써 중요한 역할을 함을 확인하였다. 반면 『박복개 필사본』은 개작을 거치면서 무가의 이해를 돕는 요소가 추가되었지만 장황해진 문장으로 인해 연행에는 적합하지 않은 한계를 보였다. 그러나 필사 과정에서 당대의 관용적인 표현이 반영된 특징을 발견할 수 있었으며 이는 지금도 충분히 참고할 만한 가치가 있다.
Abstract
The Hwangcheonmundap (Question and Answer in the Afterlife) of the Tongyeong Oguisaenam-gut is a shamanic chant that depicts the journey of the deceased in the afterlife. This chant serves as a ritual process in which the deceased must answer questions posed by the judges of the underworld correctly to be guided toward paradise. The core of Hwangcheonmundap lies in the purification of the deceased’s karma and their transition to paradise, thereby emphasizing the ritual significance of Oguisaenam-gut. This study analyzes the structure and characteristics of Hwangcheonmundap and compares different manuscript versions to identify the most authentic text (seonbon). The findings confirm that Eojeong Seolbeopmun is the oldest and most well-structured version, effectively conveying the intended meaning of the chant. In contrast, the Bak Bokgae Manuscript includes modifications that aid in understanding but is overly verbose, making it less suitable for ritual performances. However, the manuscript also reflects conventional expressions from its time, which remain valuable for reference today.
