Abstract
This study examines the historical and cultural significance of Hellenistic Athens within the framework of cultural landscapes, focusing on the records of early Hellenistic rulers and their commemorative monuments as described in Pausanias’ Periegesis Book 1, ‘Attica’. Pausanias provides detailed accounts of Athens’ major architectural landmarks, monuments, and artworks, interwoven with myths and historical narratives. He devotes considerable attention to the turbulent political circumstances of Athens following the death of Alexander the Great, highlighting the role of his successors (Diadochoi) and their associated monuments. These accounts reflect the shifting nature of Athenian political autonomy and resonate with the broader context of Greek identity and historical memory under Roman rule. Pausanias’ interest in this era aligns with the Greek cultural revival of the Second Sophistic in the 2nd century CE. This period saw the reconstruction of Athens, supported by Emperor Hadrian, and the prominence of Herodes Atticus, an Athenian rhetorician and central cultural figure, which re-established Athens as a symbolic center of classical Greek heritage. This study analyzes Pausanias’ descriptions of the Hellenistic rulers and their monuments in the Attica region. This is done to shed light on how the cultural heritage of the Hellenistic period was perceived by travelers in 2nd-century Athens. By exploring Pausanias’ perspective, the research aims to reinterpret the historical significance of Hellenistic Athens and the enduring importance of his accounts within the cultural landscape of his time.
