Abstract

This study investigates the introduction of the worship of Asklepios on the island of Kos in the classical and Hellenistic period and its political utilization. As a member of the Doric Hexapolis, Kos occupied a significant position within the ancient Greek world. From the 5-4th century BCE, Kos faced political and military pressures from powers such as Athens and Caria, leading to changes in the region’s religious and political systems. In an effort to establish a distinct identity, Kos imported the worship of Asklepios from Epidauros in the Peloponnese. However, during this period, there was a close political relationship between Caria and Kos, the worship of Asklepios in Kos being significantly influenced by Carian authority. This explains why the early worship of Asklepios coexisted with the more traditional worship of Heracles, which emphasized Doric elements. By the Hellenistic period, Kos encountered a new political landscape as Carian power waned and Hellenistic dynasties emerged. Kos experienced further development through close cooperation with these new powers, particularly under the patronage of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, which led to the expansion of the Asklepieian sanctuary and the establishment of the penteteric festival of Asklepios. From the 3rd century BCE, Kos played a significant role in the Greek world through its commercial and political relations with the Ptolemaic dynasty, also gaining a reputation as a center of the medical school. This research analyzes how Kos developed the worship of Asklepios among various political forces and established its own cultural identity.
