초록

In 1939 a portrait bust which was inscribed with the name of Themistocleswas excavated near the theatre of ancient Ostia. Its style and inscription indicatethat it was carved in the second century A. D. It is presumed that the Ostiaportrait dates back to the late Roman period, and the statue is the copy of theoriginal Themistocles. The question remains: was it copied from the originalone? The Ostia portrait is thought to be a copy of Greek Severe style sculpture. Similar style statues have been found with the Aristogeiton of “Tyrannicides”,and a Lapith from the pediment of Zeus temple at Olympia. The portraitrepresented his figure as he was in his lifetime or soon after his death around460 B.C. Virtually every facet of Themistocles’ personality has been discernedin this portrait: a farseeing, fearless, but headstrong man, a saviour in time ofstress. From what statues is the Ostia portrait originated? There are some plausiblehypotheses : a small portrait statue in the temple of Artemis Aristoboule, whichdepicted him as heroic in spirit and appearance; a monument in Magnesia withstatues, which may have represented Themistocles himself; the statues in theAthenian Prytaneion of Miltiades and Themistocles which had been renamed todesignate a Roman and a Thracian; the statue of Themistocles in the theatreof Dionysos at Athens, not conceived as military leaders but as great statesmen, without helmets. He was represented as a nude hero, not through militarypower, but through intelligent planning, won the victory over the mightyPersian army and freedom from Asiatic despotism.
