Abstract
This paper analyzes “A Diagram of the Kinds of Beings [物宗類圖]” which is included in Part IV of Matteo Ricci’s The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven [天主 實義], and examines its structural relationship to the “Porphyrian Tree,” a popular schema of medieval Western logic. The Diagram is a classificatory schema that visually displays hierarchies among beings, structuring the order of things through stepwise bifurcations based on substance and attributes as well as on the presence or absence of life, sensation, and reason. While this structure resembles the genus differentia–species hierarchy inherent in the “Porphyrian Tree,” it diverges in its overall form, branching procedure, and visual composition. Whereas the “Porphyrian Tree” was devised for concept definition and logical training, the Diagram functions as an ontological schema intended to explain the essential properties and order of beings. In particular, it can be read as a product of a missionary strategy to criticize the doctrine of the Ultimate Unity of all Things [萬物 一體論] emphasized in Song–Ming Neo-Confucianism, by underscoring essential differences among humans, the Lord of Heaven, and other created beings. By strategically adapting structures of Western logic to Chinese modes of thought, Ricci sought to convey Christian ontology in visual form. This study focuses on Matteo Ricci’s adaptation of the formal apparatus of Western logic to Chinese modes of thought, through which he rendered, in a single schema, the hierarchy of beings as understood in Christianity. Furthermore, our analysis of A Diagram of the Kinds of Beings shows that it is not a mere borrowing of a schema but a transformation effected at the intersection of Eastern and Western thought—one that reveals both the tensions between these heterogeneous traditions and the negotiations that mediate them.
