Abstract
Enrique Dussel’s ethics is not aimed at presenting a metaphysical discourse like Emmanuel Levinas, but materially liberating the innocent victims produced by the modernity/coloniality/totality/capitalist system through social practice. What should be noted in his ethics is that he expands his gaze to the poor and oppressed people in the entire global village without fixing his gaze on ‘a specific race or ethnicity’. According to him, about 75% of the global population are ‘others’. After all, for Dussel, all the socially weak and victims in the global village that have been mass-produced since modern times are the ‘other’. Dussel’s ethics aims to save and free them. That is why he named his ethics “a worldwide ethical liberation project”. In this respect, Dussel’s ethics should be distinguished from Levinas’s ethics trapped in Eurocentrism. Not only that, but also Dussel did not constitute a ‘communication community’ through ‘dominating reason’ like Jürgen Habermas and Karl Otto Apel, but rather ‘ethical reason’ and ‘liberating reason’. Through this new ethics and reason, Dussel tries to form a ‘community of justice’. In this era where the expression ‘global village’ has become commonplace, Dussel’s ethics have appeal and persuasive power because they represent the position of the third world and is a worldwide liberation project set in the global community.
