Abstract

The concept of fit between individuals and their organization, job, environment, and colleagues has become a central theoretical framework in public service motivation (PSM) research. However, previous studies have not sufficiently examined the potential effects of fit between PSM and the vocation of public sector work itself, beyond organizational or job-specific factors. This study examines the impact of PSM-public sector vocational fit on job performance, employing polynomial regression and response surface analysis. The results show that job performance increases when PSM and satisfaction with public vocation are both high and aligned. Interestingly, even in cases of misfit, individuals with high levels of PSM tend to maintain a relatively high level of job performance. These findings and their implications are discussed in the conclusion.
