Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how Aeneas in The Aeneid transforms himself into an ideal Roman leader. The comparison of the preamble of The Aeneid with those of The Iliad and The Odyssey shows that Aeneas, unlike a Homeric hero preoccupied with honor and fame, is a leader exercising the Roman virtue of pietas in order to fulfill the fate of building a new city in Italy, which is the purpose of history. This realization of pietas, further, is concretized in the process in which Aeneas has made the right decision in Troy, Carthage, Sicily, and Italy, in order to fulfill the fate revealed in the form of a vision. (1) In Troy, Aeneas does not strive for fame by means of a heroic death, but he decides instead to save his family and people and to leave Troy. (2) In Carthage, he does not seek his own personal love and happiness, but he decides to fulfill the public mission by sacrificing his desires. (3) In Sicily, he does not settle in that city because of human frailty, but he instead decides to leave there to fulfill fate. (4) In Italy, he does not show pity to the defeated enemy, Turnus, but he decides to take vengeance on him for the sake of his duty of alliance. These decisions are originated from the spirit of pietas. Therefore, Virgil exhibited Augustus as the prime example of the ideal Roman leader by characterizing Aeneas.
