이 글은 클라우디아누스가 <아이네이스> 1권과 6권의 표현을 활용하여 <길도전쟁기>를 창작한 의도를 밝히고자 한다. 집권 초기, 스틸리코는 정통성의 부족과 동방 제국의 견제 등으로 인해 불안한 정치적 입지에 놓였다. 스틸리코는 서방 제국의 식량 부족을 초래한 길도 전쟁을 대승으로 이끎으로써 이 정치적 위기를 해소할 계기를 마련하였다. 클라우디아누스는 이 업적을 <아이네이스>의 표현을 활용해 찬양하여 스틸리코의 입지를 강화하고자 하였다. 시인은 1권의 표현을 차용하여 당대의 위축되고 굶주린 로마를 그리는 한편, 아프리카를 로마의 굶주림을 해결하고 국운을 회복하기 위해 필수적인 제국의 일부로 그린다. 6권을 활용해서는 질서를 회복하고 패권을 투사하며 화합을 선사하는 전형적인 로마다운 영웅 스틸리코를 표현하였다. 클라우디아누스는 궁정을 중심으로 재편된 당대의 정치적 현실도 놓치지 않았다. 황가 일원에 대한 묘사를 추가하여 스틸리코의 황가적 혈연관계를 강조하고 동서 두 제국과 황제에게 화합을 가져오는 역할을 부각함으로써 스틸리코의 로마다움을 부각하였던 것이다.
Abstract
This article aims to examine the intention of Claudian's reference to the books I and VI of Aeneid in his work De Bello Gildonico. Being the first remarkable military feat of Stilicho surrounded by lacking legitimacy and the Eastern threat, the victory over Gildo was skillfully eulogized with the reference on Aeneid, underlining the necessity of such expedition and shedding light on the Romanitas of the semi-barbaric leader at the same time. With the help of the first book, The poet represented Rome of his time shrunk and hungry, while depicting Africa as the crucial part of the empire to fulfill Roman hunger and rejuvenate the empire herself. With the help of the sixth book, Claudian was able to apply the image of the classic Roman hero to the generalissimo by referring to the rejuvenating, hegemonic, and harmonious hero. With his reference on the imperial family added, Claudian was able to emphasize the Romanitas of Stilicho by presenting the blood connection between the general and the imperial family, and making him the agent of Concordia between the two brothers, ultimately the two empires, while not provoking the new status quo as dominatus.
