Abstract

What distinguishes Book 8 of the Aeneid from other books is that Virgil carefully uses the places where Augustan monuments stand in the city of Rome and therefore connects closely the world of Aeneas with Augustan Rome. The places of Pallanteum viewed by Aeneas in Book 8 remind the reader of the enormous and magnificent monuments standing in the same location in Augustan Rome. Focusing on these features, this paper analyzes Book 8 in terms of cultural memory. Aeneas’ experience in Pallanteum reflects the way in which the Romans value the places of memory. Also, the poet’s interest in temporality shares a common concern with the intellectuals of the late Republic and Augustan age. Virgil constructs a complex structure of cultural memories with different elements from different ages, which gives the Aeneid originality.
