Abstract

This study explored counselor’s perception of self-care by using a concept mapping approach. For the purpose, this study extracted the traits of self-care perceived by counselor, identified the dimensions and clusters of self-care perceived by counselor, confirmed the importance and frequency as counselors’ perception of self-care. To explore counselor’s perception of self-care, fifteen expert counselor were interviewed and responses were rated by seventeen expert counselor regarding the frequency and importance of statements collected from the interview. As a result, 66 statements were identified as self-care perceived by counselor. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were employed to identify dimensions and clusters of the statements. Counselors perceived the self-care in two dimensions: ‘Professional vs. Personal’, ‘Internal resource’ vs. External resource’. and seven clusters: ‘Recognition and acceptance of limit as a counselor’, ‘Self-awareness and self-regulation’, ‘Learning and career development’, ‘Relational support seeking’, ‘Promotion of spiritual well-being’, ‘Relaxation and health care’, ‘Refresh through leisure activity’. The results of importance and frequency ratings suggested that ‘Relational support seeking’ was the most important factors as counselors’ perception of self-care and most often used in terms of frequency. Based on the results of this study, implication and limitations for future studies were suggested.
