Abstract
A remarkable bishop in Church History during the Later Roman Empire, Athanasius was very famous for his constant resistance for the sake of the Christian creed: namely the "Nicaean Creed". This paper, however, focuses on another aspect of this churchman. He overcame oppression from Constantius II and his supporters -Arian Christians- and survived even the emperor Constantius. What made this possible? As practical proofs, three elements of his power base might be considered: The Church of Alexandria, Both Augustus(Constantinus II and Constans) and the influential bishops such as Julius, Liberius and Ossius. Firstly, he used the church of Alexandria as the base camp for his struggle against Constantius II and the Arian bishops. Through constant contacts with it he could even check the actual authority of his opposing successors and paved the way for his effective comeback there. He profited from the rivalry among the three sons of the late Constantinus the Great. He persuaded Constantinus II to write a supporting letter on his reinstitution while Constans attempted to intimidate Constantius II even to the point of war. Athanasius was also very clever in getting mighty bishops to his side. In order to fight against Constantius II and the Arians he led Julius the bishop of Rome to prepare for the institution of one council all over the Roman empire. Later the successor of Julius, Liberius, was still helpful to Athanasius, not to mention of the bishop of Cordova, Ossius who joined the Serdican council together with Athanasius. We need to consider one very political aspect of the person Athanasius. He was on the one hand a very faithful supporter for the Nicaean Creed. But on the other hand he was surely a very practical political person who used several kinds of influential people for his cause. His long struggle for the orthodox doctrine is also one clear evidence that he was very shrewd and strategic in pursuing his cause. This very humane aspect, in other words, the political character of the man should never be overlooked.
