초록

본 논문은 우선적으로 니케아 신경의 (복원된) 헬라어 원문과 문자적 번역을제공하는 것으로 일차 목적으로 한다. 니케아 공의회(325 A.D.)는 기독교의첫 번째 보편(혹은 에큐메니컬) 공의회였다. 이 공의회가 개최될 당시, 기독교는 예수(즉, 로고스)가 피조물이었다고 주장한 아리우스에 의해 분열되었다. 이 상황에서, 대립하고 있던 양 진영(즉, 반－아리우스주의자들과 아리우스주의자들)의 화해를 통해 로마 제국의 평화를 염원했던 콘스탄티누스 황제는 니케아로 교회 지도자들을 소집했다. 이 공의회의 결과로 아리우스와그의 지지자들(즉, 아리우스주의)에 반대한 신경이 공표되었는데, 그것이 바로 니케아 신경이다. 니케아 신경의 원문은 전해지지 않는다. 그러나 일부 고대 기독교 저자들이 이 신경을 보존해 왔고, 현재 여섯 명의 저자들 중에서 적어도 아홉 개의본문을 찾아볼 수 있다: 아타나시우의 세 작품들(De Decretis Nicaenae Synodi,35.8[A1a] and 37.2[A1b], Epistula ad Jovianum, lines 18-36[A2], and Didascalia cccxviii Patrum Nicaenorum, 28[A3]), 대 바질의 한 통의 편지(Epistula, 125.2[B]), 알렉산드리아의 키릴의 두 통의 편지들(Epistula, 17.69[C1] and 55.177[C2]), 소크라테스의 교회사(Historia ecclesiastica, 1.8.29-30[Sa] and 1.8.44-45[Sb]), 테오도렛의 교회사(Historia ecclesiastica, 1.12[T]), 그리고 가이사랴인겔라시우스의 교회사(Historia ecclesiastica, 2.35.9[G]). 이 작품들 외에, 니케아신경은 두 개의 이집트 파피루스들에서도 발견되었는데, 그것은 5세기의 옥시린쿠스 파피루스 2067(P.Oxy. 2067)과 6세기의 라인란즈 파피루스(P.Ryl. 1. 6.)이다. 이 증거들에 대한 비교/분석을 통해, 필자는 니케아 신경의 헬라어본문의 복원을 시도했고, 또한 이 복원된 본문에 근거해 번역을 제공하고자시도했다. 번역에 있어서 필자는 역동적 번역보다는 문자적 번역을 선택했다. 그 이유는 본 논문의 목적은 여전히 원어로 된 신경을 읽고 이해하는 데어려움을 느끼는 이들을 위 니케아 신경의 헬라어 본문과 그 번역을 제공하는 것이었기 때문이다. 필자는 이들을 위해 역동적 번역보다는 문자적 번역이 보다 도움이 될 것이라 판단했다.

Abstract

This article primarily aims to offer a reconstructed Greek text of the Creed of Nicaea and its (literal) translation. The Council of Nicaea(325A.D.) was the first universal(or ecumenical) council of Christianity. At that time when this council opened, Christianity was facing a schism that was caused by Arius who insisted that Jesus(viz., Logos) was a creature. In this situation, the emperor Constantius who wanted the peace of the Empire through the reconciliation of two conflicting sides(viz., the anti-Arians and the Arians) convoked the church leaders to Nicaea. As a result of this council, a creed that surely opposed against Arius and his supporters(viz., Arianism) was issued, i.e., the Creed of Nicaea. The original text of the Creed of Nicaea has not been transmitted. However, some ancient Christian authors have preserved it in their works. Now, we can find it in at least nine separated works from six authors. It has been preserved in Athanasius’ three works(De Decretis Nicaenae Synodi, 35.8[A1a] and 37.2[A1b], Epistula ad Jovianum, lines 18-36[A2], and Didascalia cccxviii Patrum Nicaenorum, 28[A3]), one letter of Basil the Great(Epistula, 125.2[B]), two letters of Cyril of Alexandria (Epistula, 17.69[C1] and 55.177[C2]), Socrates’ Historia ecclesiastica,1.8.29-30(Sa) and 1.8.44-45(Sb), Theodoret’s Historia ecclesiastica, 1.12(T), and Caesarean Gelasius’ Historia ecclesiastica, 2.35.9(G). Besides these works, we have two Egyptian papyrus fragments that contain this creed from the 5th and 6th century A.D., i.e., P.Oxy. 2067 and P.Ryl. 1. 6. Based on comparative analysis of these witnesses, I tried to offer a reconstructed Greek text of the Creed of Nicaea and its translation from the Greek text. In translating, I did not pursue a dynamic translation, but a literal one because my intention was to provide a reconstructed Greek text of the creed and its translation for those who still feel some of difficulties in reading and understanding the creed in its orignal language. For them, I am sure that a literal translation is more helpful than a dynamic one.
