305년 알렉산드리아 교구에서 멜레티우스 분열이 발생했을 때부터, 특히 324년 니키니우스에게 승리한 다음부터 콘스탄티누스 황제는 특별히 교회의 평화와 통일의 기초위에 제국의 평화와 통일을 이룩하고자 노력했다. 그는 처음에 총대감독의 관할 하에 교회의 질서를 세우기 위하여 하급자들과 소수파를 추방했지만, 예상했던 결과를 도출해 내지는 못했다. 그러나 328년 아타나시우스가 알렉산드리아의 총대감독으로 취임한 다음부터 교회문제를 다룰 새로운 방법을 찾아냈다. 곧 교회의 현안 문제들의 근원을 제거하는 것이었는데, 황제에게는 아타나시우스가 제국의 평화와 통일의 유일한 장애물이었다. 결국 아타나시우스가 멜레티우스-에우세비우스 파에게 거짓 고소당해서 유배당했던 335년 튀루스 교회회의는 황제의 교회정치에 대한 근본기조를 잘 드러내는 사건이었다. 종종 콘스탄티누스 황제는 교회문제에 대한 개입과 처리과정에서 갈팡질팡했었다고 비판받기도 하지만, 필자의 생각으로는 그것은 단지 피상적으로 파악한 것이며, 지난 30년 동안 그의 교회정책 기조에는 변함없었고, 단지 전술적인 방법에서만 융통성을 발휘했던 것이다. 정리하자면, 처음에는 하급자와 소수파를 누르고 상급자와 다수파의 손을 들어주다가 328년을 기점으로 다수파의 입장에서 문제의 근원을 도려내는 쪽으로 방향을 전환했던 때에 아타나시우스 감독이 태풍의 중심부에 서 있었던 셈이었다.
Abstract
Since the Meletian schism (305) and the Arian Controversy(318) had occurred in the Alexandrian diocese, specially after the victory against Licinius(324), the emperor Constantine had tried to build a foundation for the peace and union of the Roman Empire on the base of ecclesiastical power. At first he had driven out subordinates or minorities, in order to establish clerical order under the supervision of the archbishop, but failed to realize the anticipated results. Since the year 328, after young Athanasius’ inauguration of the archbishop of Alexandria, he devised new means to handle ecclesiastical affairs: he removed the root of pending problems within the church. At that time the emperor thought that Athanasius was the one and only hinderance for the peace and union of the Roman Empire. Finally at the Trial of Tyre in 335, Athanasius, under false accusations, was excommunicated and exiled. Sometimes, however, the emperor's reaction regarding ecclesiastical problems can be criticised as inconsistent, but in my opinion that is just a superficial observation. During the last thirty years his basic tone for ecclesiastical politics remained unchanged, but his tactical methods were flexible.
