Abstract

This study employed Python-based natural language processing (NLP) techniques to systematically analyze sixteen selected works from the Berenstain Bears series according to thematic type(family category vs. community category). The analysis focused on four dimensions: lexical diversity, sentiment distribution, reading difficulty, and semantic structure. Lexical diversity was assessed using the Moving Average Type-Token Ratio (MATTR), and no statistically significant differences were observed between the two thematic types. Sentiment analysis indicated a slightly higher frequency of positive sentences in the community category; however, neither the number nor the proportion of positive sentences differed significantly across types. Reading difficulty, measured using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) indices, also showed no significant differences, suggesting that the series maintains a consistent level of accessibility suitable for early English learners. Semantic organization was examined through a word2vec-based Adaptive Semantic Similarity Network (ASSN). The family category formed word networks centered on family members and everyday settings, highlighting emotional intimacy, whereas the community category exhibited more expansive and interconnected semantic structures that may facilitate social understanding and vocabulary development. Overall, the findings suggest that, within the selected sixteen Berenstain Bears stories, the series maintains stable linguistic and emotional structures regardless of thematic type and may serve as effective educational material aligned with children’s interests and developmental levels.
