Abstract

This study proposes a practical instructional plan that integrates children’s English picture books with Python-based natural language processing to support the construction of corpora for English language learning. A total of 16 picture books by a range of creators who occupied various creative roles, including those of author, illustrator, and editor‒Watty Piper, Beatrix Potter, Leslie Brooke, Walter Crane, and Edward Lear‒were selected from Project Gutenberg and used as foundational texts for in-class corpus development. The instructional framework is built upon interdisciplinary and project-based learning approaches. Learners are first introduced to doing basic Python programming, learning natural language processing techniques which includes pre-processing, and estimating lexical diversity(e.g., MATTR ranges from 64.48% to 78.33% by creator). The instructor demonstrates how to extract Common Core Words (CCW) that are input to generating word clouds. Then, students form small groups, select children’s English literature of interest, and construct their own English learning corpus using Project Gutenberg materials. Each group conducts a project to pre-process their selected texts, extract CCW, and visualize lexical trends through word cloud generation. By engaging in this end-to-end process, learners not only develop technical skills in data handling and NLP but also acquire the ability to analyze linguistic features structurally and creatively. This study presents a replicable instructional design that effectively combines literature and digital tools to foster self-directed, data-driven English learning in a project-based environment.
